Στην παρούσα μονογραφία παρουσιάζεται η Μονή του Αγίου Γεωργίου στο Παπίκιον όρος και ανιχνεύεται η παρουσία μελών της ιβηρικής αριστοκρατίας του Βυζαντίου. Εξετάζονται η αρχιτεκτονική, το δάπεδο, οι τοιχογραφίες και η περίφημη κτητορική παράσταση, και τεκμηριώνεται η ταύτιση των προσώπων της με την αυτοκράτειρα Μαρία Αλανή και τον γιο της Κωνσταντίνο Δούκα. Επιπλέον, αναλύονται τα δεδομένα για το δαχτυλίδι της Μαρίας Αλανής-Βοτανειατίνας και αναδεικνύονται μέσα από τις πηγές η πολυτάραχη ζωή της και οι σχέσεις της με τον Αλέξιο Κομνηνό, το Παπίκιον και τους Πακουριανούς. Τέλος, επιχειρείται μία νέα υπόθεση για το πρόσωπο που ήταν θαμμένο στον τάφο, όπου βρέθηκε το δαχτυλίδι της.
Η ανά χείρας μελέτη αποκαλύπτει άγνωστες πτυχες όχι μόνο της ιστορίας του Παπικίου, αλλά και γενικά της εποχής της βασιλείας του Αλεξίου Κομνηνού, όπως και της ιστορίας του μοναχισμού, και ταυτόχρονα αποτελεί συμβολή στην ιστορία της βυζαντινής τέχνης και ειδικότερα της Θράκης και του Αγίου Όρους. Ταυτίζονται και ετυμολογούνται γνωστά βυζαντινά τοπωνύμια και διερευνώνται πτυχές του κανονικού δικαίου.
Πρόκειται για ένα συναρπαστικό ταξίδι στον χρόνο, στην ιστορία της Θράκης της περιόδου των Κομνηνών και ένα αναβάπτισμα στην πνευματική παράδοσή της: αυτήν που χάρισε στην Εκκλησία το δικό της Άγιον Όρος, το Παπίκιον.
Kountourakis Ant. Dimitrios, Mount Papikion and the Iberian aristocracy of Byzantium. The monastery of Saint George, Maria of Alania and Gregory Pakourianos
This dissertation deals with the Monastery of St George (situated on Mount Papikion in Thrace), which is identified with the excavated monastery complex near the village of Lenos, as well as the presence in it of members of the Iberian aristocracy of Byzantium, as evidenced by the excavation data and the lives of the Empress Mary of Alania and the Great Domestic of the West, Gregory Pacourianos. A multitude of topics relating to the Monastery are treated in its individual chapters: the architecture; the marble floor; the two layers of frescoes; the ktetoric portrait in the esonarthex of the katholikon and the identification of the figures depicted with Mary of Alania and her son Constantine Doukas based on their royal insignia and their particular physiognomies, known from Byzantine sources; the signet ring of Mary of Alania Botaneiatena; her turbulent life from birth to voluntary renunciation, the death of her son and her disappearance from the political scene; her relationship with Mount Papikion, the Pacuriani and the monastery complex of Lenos; the person who was buried in Tomb Nr 10 where the ring was found; the identification of the monastery with the metochion of St. George mentioned in the Typikon of the Petritzonitissa Monastery (1083), which proves the Iberian presence in Papikion, as these are deduced from a detailed examination of the lives of Mary of Alania and Gregory Pacourianos.
