Chryssochoidis Kriton & Livanos Nikos, The newest archive of Iviron Monastery. Methodological problems in classifying and cataloguing an Athonite archive
The last three years have seen the start of the task of classifying and cataloguing the contemporary archives of the Monastery of Iviron, which is a part of the program’s works concerning Mount Athos’s Post-Byzantine archives. This work was undertaken upon request and invitation of the monastery. The archive material to be classified dates from between 1800 and 1912, the year in which Mount Athos was liberated and joined the Kingdom of Greece. This chronological limitation does not relate to any periodization and was not set by the scientific team, but was dictated by the material itself. The reason for this is that some years ago the monastery’s secretariat systematically separated the documents dated after 1912 as those belonging to a quasi-active archive. The purpose of this paper is to present the story of this archival collection and the reasons why its unity is disrupted. Furthermore, reference will be made to the criteria set for its operational restoration as well as the work methodology, while the archival tree formed will also be presented and described.
