Για αρκετούς αιώνες, τα ελληνικά χειρόγραφα αποτελούσαν σημαντικό και χαρακτηριστικό μέρος των ιδιωτικών και θεσμικών βιβλιοθηκών στη Βρετανία, αντανακλώντας και διαμορφώνοντας τη σκέψη και το γούστο των διαδοχικών γενεών. Τον 17ο αιώνα η Οξφόρδη κατέκτησε ηγετική θέση στον τομέα αυτό. 2 Γενναιόδωρες δωρεές από κορυφαίους Άγγλους πολιτικούς, διπλωμάτες, εκκλησιαστικούς και μελετητές περιλάμβαναν σημαντικές ελληνικές συλλογές. 3 Τον ίδιο αιώνα σημαντικά ελληνικά 1 Οι πρώτες σκέψεις για το θέμα αυτό αποτέλεσαν μέρος της ετήσιας διάλεξης Walton στη Βιβλιοθήκη Γενναδείου, στην Αθήνα, στις 24 Απριλίου 2018. For several centuries Greek manuscripts have formed an important and distinctive part of private and institutional libraries in Britain, reflecting and informing the thought and taste of successive generations.
