Miltiadis Polyviou, The Regulations Governing Church-Building on Athos in the Century before the Greek Revolution
As is well known, the century preceding the Revolution of 1821 saw an intensive period of church-building both in mainland Greece as a whole, and on Mount Athos, where church-building activity was particularly intense. The present paper attempts, on the basis of the Ottoman legislation regarding construction of non- Muslim places of worship, to explore the factors behind this phenomenon and to examine its possible interpretations, such as the possibility that it was due to a particular decision (either official, unofficial or tacit) by the central administration that exempted the Athonite peninsula from the relevant restrictive provisions, or the possibility that it was merely due to the meagre presence of the state authorities in the areas concerned.
