Summary
One of the first-class historical sources for the history of the founding of the Hilandar monastery is „The request of Protos Gerasim and the council of the Athos to Emperor Alexios III Angelos“, which requires the abandoned Hilandar Monastery to be excluded from Vatopedi and to be handed over to Serbian monks Symeon and Sava. Text of the Request provides some valuable information, which we do not find at Serbian writers at the end of XII and during the XIII century and which are related to the circumstances on the Holy Mountain and to the events surrounding the founding of the Serbian monastery Hilandar. The originality and the authenticity of the text of the document is not in question, so it is the main criterion for many issues regarding assessment of the Life of St. Simeon and the St. Sava on the founding of the Hilandar. In the modern Serbian language, we have two translations of this document: the older one from 1913 by D. Anastasijević and the more recent one from 1986 by F. Barišić. As younger generations of Serbian researchers are mainly referring to Barisic's "more modern" translation, which is less authentic than Anastasijević's, in this paper we pointed out the shortcomings of Barišić's translation, and with the comparative Greek-Serbian text of the document we performed its historical analysis.
