A large part of the preserved medieval documents issued by Serbian and Bulgarian chanceries is kept in the archives of Mount Athos. This paper reviews the study of this material in modern times: the first travelogues of pilgrims and learned men of the Enlightenment; the Russian expeditions of the nineteenth century; the early south Slavic studies and editions; the launching of the Russian Actes de l’Athos series; and the subsequent editions of the twentieth century and early twentyfirst century.
