Anyone who has had the occasion to stay in the monastery of Hilandar, as I have, cannot fail to be impressed by its artistic, quite apart from its historical and religious, interest. Its collection of icons and its archives have been professionally catalogued. Unlike their confrères in some other Athonite monasteries, the monks do not put obstacles in the way of scholars whose interest is scientific as much as spiritual. Throughout the period of Communist domination, the Serbs were able to study and maintain their artistic possessions. Moreover, particularly in their review, Hilandarski Zbornik, articles of high quality are published, both about Hilandar itself and its metochia.
This volume, published on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the monastery's foundation (1198/1199), contains thirty-three essays, all written by Serbs. Among them may be particularly noted eight essays concerned with the wall paintings, icons and illuminated manuscripts, which are followed by an extensive bibliography (p. 361-375). It is a Summa of contemporary Serbian research on Hilandar, accompanied by illustrations of high quality and written in a style which renders it as accessible to the general reader as to specialists.
Όποιος είχε την ευκαιρία να φιλοξενηθεί στη μονή Χιλανδαρίου, όπως εγώ, δεν μπορεί παρά να εντυπωσιαστεί από το καλλιτεχνικό του ενδιαφέρον, πέρα από το ιστορικό και θρησκευτικό. Η συλλογή εικόνων και τα αρχεία του έχουν καταγραφεί επαγγελματικά. Σε αντίθεση με αδελφούς τους από ορισμένα άλλα αγιορείτικα μοναστήρια, οι μοναχοί εδώ δεν θέτουν εμπόδια στους μελετητές, των οποίων το ενδιαφέρον είναι τόσο επιστημονικό όσο και πνευματικό. Καθ' όλη την περίοδο του κομμουνιστικού καθεστώτος, οι Σέρβοι επιστήμονες μπόρεσαν να μελετήσουν και να διατηρήσουν τα καλλιτεχνικά τους αγαθά. Επιπλέον δημοσιεύτηκαν και δημοσιεύονται άρθρα υψηλού επιπέδου τόσο για το ίδιο το Χιλαντάρ όσο και για τα μετόχια του, ιδιαίτερα στην επιστημονική τους επετηρίδα Hilandarski Zbornik.
Ο τόμος αυτός, που εκδόθηκε με αφορμή την 800ή επέτειο από την ίδρυση της μονής (1198/1199), περιέχει τριάντα τρία δοκίμια, όλα γραμμένα από Σέρβους. Μεταξύ αυτών επισημαίνουμε ιδιαίτερα οκτώ δοκίμια που αφορούν τις τοιχογραφίες, τις εικόνες και τα εικονογραφημένα χειρόγραφα, τα οποία ακολουθούνται από εκτενή βιβλιογραφία (σ. 361-375). Πρόκειται για μια σύνοψη της σύγχρονης σερβικής έρευνας για το Χιλανδάρι, συνοδευόμενη από εικονογράφηση υψηλής ποιότητας και γραμμένη σε ύφος που την καθιστά τόσο προσιτή στον απλό αναγνώστη όσο και στους ειδικούς.
