Art on Mount Athos in the 17th and the 18th centuries: patrons and creators
Artistic production on Mount Athos in the 17th and 18th centuries flourished in accordance on the one hand with the historical context and the economic situation on the Athonite peninsula and on the other hand with the current social, economic and cultural reality of the Ottoman occupied mainland Greece. Taking into account this historical framework and focusing on selected inscribed artworks (sculpture, woodcarving, minor objects, embroideries etc.) kept in various monasteries, I will attempt to provide a broad outline of the identities of the patrons and creators of these artworks.
