Summary
Monk Patapios Kafsokalyvitis,
From the Patria to the Athonias of monk Iakovos of New Skete ( 19th century): The recording of Athonite history by the learned Athonite fathers.
On Mount Athos at a very early date a need arose to preserve the collective historical memory of the monastic community. Thus, at first orally and then in written form, the Athonite fathers began to record their own account, which they gradually developed over the course of time, of the history of their region, its name and the origins of the foundation both of Mount Athos itself as a monastic centre and of the individual monasteries, as well as the devotional life within them. Already in the 16th century collections of narratives were in circulation that recorded Athonite patriographic traditions, such as the Partial Remembrance of the Holy Mountain of Athos from Old Stories and the Patria of the Holy Mountain. Views of Athonite history are also provided by Athonite editors of collections of handwritten accounts and authors of texts recording Athonite hagiological and liturgical traditions. From the mid-18th century onwards, an attempt was made on Mount Athos to carry out a more systematic study of its history. Thus, there emerged a number of learned monks with manifold spiritual interests who concentrated on studying the history of their region through the libraries and archives of Athos's monastic foundations. Indeed, in some cases the research requirements and methodological approach of the monks were in no way inferior to the working methods of the other historians of their age. Amongst these Athonite monks, who made such a decisive contribution to Athonite research, stand out such figures as St. Nikodimos of the Holy Mountain, Theodoritos of the Lavra from Ioannina, Sophronios Kalligas, Cosmas Vlachos, Alexandros Evmorphopoulos of Lavra, Gerasimos Smyrnakis, Evlogios Kourilas, Sophronios Evstratiadis, Christophoros Ktenas, Spyridon Kampanaos, Arkadios of Vatopedi, Ioakeim of Iviron, etc. In the above list of Athonite scholars who systematically recorded the history of Athos a special place is reserved for the monk Iakovos of New Skete (tl869), mainly because of his work Book of Old and New Annotations, or Athonias. The Athonias was compiled in the period 1848-1865 and constitutes a very extensive history of Mount Athos and Athonite monasticism from early Christian times up until the author's day. The present paper makes a systematic analysis of the work, its sources and the influence it had on the development of Athonite historiography.
